Friendship requests

Campers can submit friendship requests in the spring and we will do our best to accommodate mutual requests as long as campers are entering the same grade.

Our traditional camp experience encourages campers to try everything! Campers participate in a wide variety of activities ranging from arts and crafts, sports and drama to name a few! And, everyone comes together for Friday Shabbat celebrations, cookouts, theme days, field trips and our annual Maccabi games.

Convenient carpool drop-off and pick-up

Morning drop-off is a breeze. A staff member will come to your car rain or shine to help your child out of their seat. You’ll get to see your camper skip off hand in hand with a smiling counselor by their side and you never even have to get out of your car! At pick-up time, just use the carpool lines again. We’ll bring your child to you, buckle them in, and you will be on your way.

Food at summer camp

A hotdog cookout is provided each Friday and a Kosher pizza lunch is provided weekly as well. Campers who don’t wish to participate in cookouts and pizza are welcome to bring their own lunch on days that they’re served. We keep sack lunches in refrigerators; don’t forget to write your camper’s name on the bag.

Food allergies

Safety and inclusion are top priorities at Apachi Day Camps. Our camps are committed to being allergy-safe. While our camps are not allergen-free, we strive to make our camp environments as safe as possible for children with food allergies using a customized approach and working closely with each family to develop an action plan for the child. More information can be found here.

Immunizations & Health Forms

To participate in camp, campers must have a completed health form signed by a physician on file. We also require documentation of immunizations.

The nurse, is in

Our full-time registered nurse is on-site all summer to treat minor injuries and prescribe campers a little “tlc” when needed. If your child visits the nurse, you will be notified about the treatment. In the rare event of a serious injury, you will be notified immediately and, if you are unavailable, we will contact those on your emergency calling list.

Camper Care

Our Community Care team, made up of mental health professionals and special education teachers, ensure the ever-evolving social emotional needs of our campers are met so they can be successful at camp.

American Red Cross Swim Program

Campers are taught to swim using the American Red Cross’ Learn-to-Swim program, which focuses on building campers’ confidence and comfortability in the water. Campers swim at least twice a week at Bernard Horwich JCC’s indoor pool in Rogers Park.

Skills one step at a time.

By giving campers the opportunity to master one element before moving on to the next, it makes it easy to build confidence in the water. Safety is our priority and all members of our Aquatics staff are American Red Cross certified lifeguards with CPR training for the professional rescuer.

Testing, Placement and Progress Reports

Campers are tested at the beginning of summer and placed in an appropriate swim level based on their skills. They pass through levels based on both formal and informal testing.

For campers needing extra support, there are several support options available to ensure a successful summer. You can choose from support through JCC Chicago or your child’s paraprofessional depending on which option works best for your camper and family. For more information, please connect with your Apachi Day Camp Director.

andrea merfeld

Andrea Merfeld

Director, Apachi Evanston

Andrea Merfeld has been part of the JCC family for over 30 years. She was a camper, a counselor, a Unit Head, and then the Assistant Director of Apachi Evanston, and currently the Camp Director of Apachi Evanston and Rogers Park. Camp is Andrea’s happy place. She loves being the director of Apachi Evanston because she gets to take part in forming a “summer family” year after year. Her favorite time of the camp day is the morning when she gets to see campers jump out of their cars into the arms of their counselors with giant smiles on their faces.

Andrea holds a degree in Human Development and Family Studies from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, a Master’s Degree in Education from National Louis University, and a General Administrative Certification from Concordia University. Prior to working full time at JCC Chicago, Andrea was a classroom teacher for 18 years. She is thrilled to finally be a part of the full time JCC family, and looks forward to continuing to be at her happy place all year!

jacob rosenstein

Jacob Rosenstein

Assistant Director, Apachi Evanston & Site Director, Apachi at Bernard Horwich JCC

Growing up, summer camp always held a special place in Jacob’s life. He loved the endless opportunities available to try new activities and develop new skills, and camp gave him the confidence to know he could do anything he set his mind to. Inspired by the transformative impact his counselors had on him, Jacob knew, since he was ten years old, that he wanted to be a camp director so he could pay his special camp experiences forward. He previously worked as a counselor, Unit Head and Assistant Director at the overnight camp in Wisconsin he attended as a kid and prior to joining Apachi Day Camp, served as a Unit Head and Director’s Apprentice at a Jewish overnight camp in Pennsylvania. Jacob’s favorite part about summer is seeing campers escape the pressures of school, step outside their comfort zones and develop new skills in a supportive environment. Camp is truly a place of immense growth for campers and staff alike. Whether it’s dynamic problem solving, working as a team, or taking advantage of all the leadership opportunities camp provides, Jacob believes every member of our community can leave with something they’ll keep forever.

Jacob holds a B.Ed. in Elementary Education with a focus on social psychology and human development from Boston University, and he’s excited to bring his expertise and years of camping experience to Apachi Evanston. When not at camp, you’ll find Jacob rock climbing, jamming out to live music and cheering on his favorite Chicago sports teams.

Petra Matanda

Manager of Operations, Apachi Evanston

Before coming to Illinois, Petra lived in the Netherlands for many years where she discovered her joy in working with children and families. This led Petra to start her journey with the J as an Administrative Aid in Early Childhood at Bernard Horwich JCC. Since then, she’s transitioned into supporting Apachi Evanston and has never looked back! She loves to help others and create an environment where campers, families and staff feel at home. Her favorite thing about summer is getting to know the ins-and-outs of camp, and having never been a camper as a child, she feels like a kid again seeing all the camp fun!

Petra is a big-time crafter. She loves to crochet and can quickly learn anything from a good YouTube tutorial.
