Apachi Evanston In Action

andrea merfeldAndrea Merfeld

Director, Apachi Evanston

Andrea Merfeld has been the director of Apachi Evanston for the past five years and part of the JCC Chicago family for 30 years. She was a camper, a counselor, a Unit Head, and then the Assistant Director of Apachi Evanston. Camp is Andrea’s happy place. She loves being the director of Apachi Evanston because she gets to take part in forming a “summer family” year after year. Her favorite time of the camp day is the morning when she gets to see campers jump out of their cars into the arms of their counselors with giant smiles on their faces.

Andrea holds a degree in Human Development and Family Studies from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, a Master’s Degree in Education from National Louis University, and a General Administrative Certification from Concordia University. When she’s not at Apachi Evanston, she is a 3rd and 4th grade teacher.

Apachi Evanston Details

Friendship requests

Campers can submit friendship requests in the spring and we will do our best to accommodate mutual requests as long as campers are entering the same grade.

Our traditional camp experience encourages campers to try everything! Campers participate in a wide variety of activities ranging from arts and crafts, sports, drama, swimming and martial arts to name a few! And, everyone comes together for Friday Shabbat celebrations, cookouts, theme days, field trips and our annual Maccabi games.

Wildkit Aquatics

Campers are taught to swim at Apachi Evanston using the Wildkit Aquatics swim program, which uses a “progress at your own rate” philosophy. Swim lessons are taught and supervised at Evanston Township High School by their elite swimmers and coaches.

Safety is our priority and all members of our Aquatics staff are American Red Cross certified lifeguards with CPR training for the professional rescuer. We have at least two lifeguards safeguarding the pool at all times. Counselors are in the water with children and a swim instructor is assigned to each small group.

Testing, Placement and Progress Reports

Campers are tested at the beginning of summer and placed in an appropriate swim level based on their skills. They pass through levels based on both formal and informal testing. Progress reports are sent home at the end of the summer with a summary of your swimmer’s skills and accomplishments.

Convenient carpool drop-off and pick-up

Morning drop-off is a breeze. A staff member will come to your car rain or shine to help your child out of their seat. You’ll get to see your camper skip off hand in hand with a smiling counselor by their side and you never even have to get out of your car! At pick-up time, just use the carpool lines again. We’ll bring your child to you, buckle them in, and you will be on your way.

Food at summer camp

A hotdog cookout is provided each Friday. A pizza lunch is offered on Mondays for an additional cost. Campers who don’t wish to participate in cookouts and pizza are welcome to bring their own lunch on those days as well. We keep sack lunches in coolers; don’t forget to write your camper’s name on the bag.

Food allergies

Safety and inclusion are top priorities at JCC Chicago Day Camps. Our camps are committed to being allergy-safe. While our camps are not allergen-free, we strive to make our camp environments as safe as possible for children with food allergies using a customized approach and working closely with each family to develop an action plan for the child. More information can be found here.

Immunizations & Health Forms

To participate in camp, campers must have a completed health form signed by a physician on file. We also require documentation of immunizations.
