Our History

JCC Chicago has long been a leader in supporting every child’s whole self. With a dedicated team of experienced mental health professionals and special education teachers, we’ve fostered a camp environment where every child is supported. Over the years, we’ve expanded our model, increasing our capacity to meet the diverse needs of all campers.

In 2019, we introduced our Community Care team, including mental health professionals dedicated to supporting campers socially and emotionally. In 2023, we welcomed an Inclusion Manager and a team of special education professionals at each site, ensuring that campers of all abilities can fully participate in the fun.

We continue to grow our capacity to support more campers by increasing our Community Care and Inclusion staff, enhancing professional development for our Apachi Day Camp directors, and implementing best practices. Our leadership team has trained in de-escalation strategies through the Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI), and attended workshops through Foundation for Jewish Camp (FJC), and JCC Association of North America (JCCA), covering disability acceptance, inclusion, and MESSH (Mental, Emotional, Social, and Spiritual Health).

By offering extended support options, we ensure that campers of all abilities can experience the joy, friendships, and personal growth that make summers at Apachi unforgettable.

We support campers with a variety of needs, including those who may not have a formal IEP (Individualized Education Plan) or 504 plan but would benefit from extra guidance to help them thrive in the camp environment.

During the intake process, which is led by our Inclusion Manager, we work together to determine the appropriate level of support needed to ensure a meaningful and successful summer camp experience.

Each summer, we tailor our support to meet the unique needs of our campers, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to participate fully and have a meaningful camp experience.

At JCC Chicago, our process begins with a thorough intake meeting with the family to learn about their child’s strengths, interests, and areas of need. The intake process may also include:

  • Collaboration with teachers, therapists, or other professionals who can provide insights on how to best support the child in a camp environment.
  • An observation in the school environment to gain a better understanding of the child’s needs.
  • Review of pertinent documents including but not limited to IEP, Individualized Education Program, 504 plan or other provider reports.

Based on this information, we develop an Individualized Camper Plan (ICP) to guide the staff in supporting each child’s unique strengths and needs.

Each Apachi Day Camp location is supported by a seasonal Inclusion Site Director who provides guidance to both counselors and campers. They ensure that the strategies outlined in each camper’s Individualized Camper Plan are implemented to help every child thrive. Inclusion Site Directors also work closely with families, sharing regular updates that highlight progress, celebrate successes, and address any challenges through weekly communication.

Families can also choose to get the support their camper(s) need through Keshet. Visit keshet.org to learn more about their programs and the support they provide.

Our team of qualified staff members receive specialized training to meet campers’ social emotional, communication, and behavioral needs.

At Apachi Day Camp, our Community Care team is dedicated to supporting the social-emotional well-being and development of all campers. Comprised of social workers and special education teachers, the Community Care team prioritizes both the mental and physical safety of campers. As the ultimate goal is for children to enjoy a summer full of fun, friendships, and confidence-building activities, the team assists children in navigating big feelings, managing peer relationships, and addressing unexpected behaviors with thoughtful and sensitive interventions. Community Care staff help train counselors during orientation and throughout the summer to ensure they are well-equipped to create a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for all campers.

Each camp offers a physical space for calming and regulating emotions and counselors are trained in mindfulness and team-building activities for transitions such as belly breathing or sensory treasure hunts. Additionally, the Social Services team deploys a resource toolkit with social narratives, visual tools, and activity adaptations to aid in camper support.

To register for extra support through JCC Chicago, simply complete the registration for your preferred Apachi Day Camp location. What Families Are Saying

“I couldn’t be more pleased with the support my camper is receiving through JCC Chicago. My son’s one-to-one counselor, Colin, is so dedicated to helping him participate as much as possible and make new friends. The daily communication notes are a perfect way for me to know what he enjoyed. Amanda, the inclusion unit head, sends me a very thorough and insightful e-mail each week and has been so proactive and helpful in working through challenges and developing solutions.”
   – Sara, Apachi Day Camp Parent

“Camp will really be a prime opportunity for my son’s therapist to continue to work with him. I already see a shift for him. I can’t thank you enough for sharing your ideas and experience with our family. My son will be a better boy in his life because of this opportunity. Hoping that this will help to transition him, so one day soon he can be truly independent without the need of an aid. Really appreciate our friendship.”
   – Tracy L., Apachi Day Camp Parent

“The Community Care team member has been outstanding working with my daughter. As my daughter told me, “I just feel safe knowing that she’ll will be there to help me if I need it.” I am so impressed and grateful. Apachi has far exceeded our expectations in every way. The social work support, the clear communication, the careful planning, the super fun activities – all of it so thank you and your team for all your hard work!”
   – Liz, Apachi Day Camp Parent

“Before summer, my camper was really struggling emotionally getting through a school day. The supports provided for my son this summer were amazing, and he finally felt like just another kid. He made friends, he swam, he tried some new activities, and he came home tired and happy. The difference that this summer has made in his confidence and frankly his health is amazing.”
   – Mary Jo and Luke G, Apachi Day Camp Parents

“It was incredibly evident that Karen was always rooting for my son to be his best self, setting him up for success, and sharing positive feedback about his leadership and growth. My son has felt safe and supported, and he has loved having Joey as his ‘go-to person.’ At the same time, Joey strikes the perfect balance of giving my camper his independence—stepping back, letting him build confidence, and being there when he needs him.”
   – Michelle and Craig T., Apachi Day Camp Parents
